Orange County Paramedic Base

The Emergency Department is a level two, basic services, paramedic-receiving center and is one of seven Paramedic Bases in Orange County, with thirteen Paramedic Units assigned to it. Paramedic base hospitals play an extremely important role in the assessment and treatment of patients before they arrive in the emergency department. The physicians and nurses are communicating with paramedics via radio before the patient even arrives.

Paramedic Resource for the Anaheim Fire Department Paramedics

AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center has also been designated as a Paramedic Resource for the Anaheim Fire Department Paramedics and the Paramedic Coordinator is responsible for quality maintenance, continuing education, regional paramedic advisory council and case reviews.

STEMI (Heart Attack) Receiving Center

AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department is a designated cardiac receiving center for STEMI patients. An ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a form of heart attack, and it is important that those who experience a STEMI be treated within 90 minutes of the first onset of symptoms. Orange County residents with chest pain who call 9-1-1 will automatically be directed to a STEMI center, where cardiac expertise and facilities are ready 24-hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The STEMI receiving team works in conjunction with the cardiovascular department to provide the best cardiac care available.

The Safe Place

Next to the Emergency Department is The Safe Place, a sexual assault examination unit. In order to visit the Safe Place, individuals must be assessed by the medical staff in the Emergency Department to ensure that any and all emergencies are taken care of. After this, any patient who believes that he or she has been sexually assaulted can meet with law enforcement officials at The Safe Place to submit forensic evidence of such a case.

Electrophysiology or EP examines the electrical system of the heart. Electrophysiology studies are used to diagnose exactly where the irregular heart beat (arrhythmia) is coming from. Arrhythmia can be fixed using catheter based ablation procedure or by implanting a device, such as a pacemaker/ defibrillator.

Electrophysiology Study:

These studies help your physician:

  • Assess the need for a pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD)
  • Determine your risk for future heart problems, including sudden cardiac death
  • Evaluate whether medicine is effectively controlling abnormal heart rhythms
  • Pinpoint arrhythmias that start in the heart and help identify the best treatment.

Once your physicians know the type of irregular heartbeat you have, they can determine the best treatment plan for you.

Reasons for Electrophysiology:

If you have irregular heart rhythms, you may experience dizziness, shortness of breath or fainting. An irregular heartbeat may also be fatal so it is important to see medical attention.

  • Slow heart rhythms (bradycardia) may require a pacemaker to help your heart beat properly.
  • Rapid heart rates (tachycardia) may respond to a catheter based radiofrequency ablation (RFA), which is designed to destroy the abnormal electrical pathway, allowing the heart to beat normally.
  • Other abnormal rhythms may need a device called an implantable cardiac defibrillator to stabilize your heart rate and extend your life.

Physical and Occupational Therapists assist patients with maximizing their functional mobility. Following illness, injury or surgery, therapists provide patient and family education regarding safe ways to get in and out of bed, sit down and stand up from a chair or toilet seat, and using a walker on both flat surfaces and steps. The therapists assess the need for equipment (walkers, canes, reachers, etc.) to help ensure appropriate and safe discharges.

Physical Therapists focus on assisting patients in regaining strength and mobility, and improving walking ability while maintaining their safety and monitoring their weight-bearing restrictions and any other limitations. They will also provide wound care support, when appropriate.

Occupational Therapists focus on assisting patients with regard to their ability to perform their normal activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, and eating. They will also provide patient and family education on the use of any special adaptive equipment that can enable the patient to bathe, dress, or eat more independently and easily.

Speech Therapists focus on assisting patients who are having difficulty communicating or swallowing (due to a stroke, brain injury, motor vehicle accident, surgery, illness, etc.)
